Fact and fiction about consumer debt relief

First Steps to Debt Relief

Getting out of debt can seem like an impossible and overwhelming task.  Many people have so much credit card debt they think they will never get out of it, so they do not even try.  There are things you can however to find debt relief.

The key to debt relief is to create a solid financial plan.  A good financial plan will have long-term goals, and specific steps to get there.  For example, as a teenager you may never think you can afford a car.  However, if you take the time to calculate specifically how much a car costs, how much you can earn, and how much you can save it is easy to see that buying your own car is not an impossible task.

The first thing you have to do to get out of debt is to change your thinking and your priorities.  Is it more important to you to be able to portray an image of success?  Or is it more important to actually be successful?  Drowning in credit card debt and being completely dependant on your day job is not my definition for success in my life.  You need to figure out what success means to you.

Then, you need to stop getting into debt.  You will see quickly that it is actually easier than you think to stop using credit.  If you have to finance it, you cannot afford it!  So, it may really suck that you do not have a car.  Look into public transportation.  Look into used cars.  It is possible to do without.  So do not use your credit cards for any reason – you do not need them!

Then you need to pay off the debt you have.  In order for this to happen, it needs to be a priority.  There are things you will have to sacrifice in order to pay off your debt.  Maybe you need to cancel your internet for a year.  Could this money go towards your credit cards?

Some people do not have the discipline or knowledge to make their own debt relief plan.  If this is the case, you should consider meeting with a financial planner or a credit counselor.  They will help you make a budget and financial plan for you.

This is what I know for sure when it comes to debt relief.  First of all, your happiness cannot be tied up in material things.  If it is, you will never be able to stop spending.  Secondly, you have to have perspective on the big picture.  You have to realize that saving $4 by not having a Starbucks can significantly impact your long term goals.
